My family loves the idea of going on a picnic, so we pack up what seems like half of our refrigerator a few times a year and head out to one of our favorite Savannah picnic spots.
We’re lucky, in Savannah, to have so many great picnic spots to choose from! Here’s my family’s list of top three picnic spots in Savannah:
Location: Forsyth Park (Downtown Savannah)
Features: Its 30 acres of lush greenery is the heart of downtown Savannah. Home to the famous fountain, Forsyth is easily accessible, hosts countless events (including the weekly farmers market), has access to restrooms and an on-site cafe.
What my kids love: playing on the two playgrounds and running through the fountain bordering the half shell theatre.
What I love: the sheer beauty of this park. There are so many picnic spots within this park that you have the choice to make it feel semi-private under the oaks and spanish moss at the north side of the park or make it a more social affair on the open sprawling fields.
Side note: My (now) husband and I loved it so much, that we decided to get married there. It will always hold a special place in my heart.
Location: Reynolds Square (Downtown Savannah)
Features: Like many of the beautiful squares throughout downtown Savannah, the shade of the oaks allows sunlight to dance around while you picnic without making one feel overwhelmed by the heat that the deep south can often dish out. Reynolds Square is special because it sits right in between Broughton Street (shopping, restaurants) and Bay Street whose steps lead down to the famous River Street. Its location also boasts a view of the Lucas Theatre and the Olde Pink House. Grab an ice cream from the famous Leopold's (right around the corner) after your picnic to make it a perfect day!
What my kids love: Playing tag, hide-and-seek and practicing cartwheels on the soft grass.
What I love: Doing all of this with them!
Location: Tybee Island
Features: Beach Beach Beach! This is one big picnic opportunity. Set up your picnic blanket wherever you want and take a dip in the Atlantic while you're at it. Tybee is fairly small, making a post-picnic walk to burn off those calories (or to get ice cream) very doable. Stop in one of the many charming shops and restaurants all up and down the beach to get a break from the sun.
What my kids love: Playing in the water.
What I love: Savannah's "cold" months aren't usually too cold for a picnic on the beach, so this can be an option almost any time of year.
That’s my family’s list, but I bet your family has their own favorite Savannah picnic spots! I’d love to know where they are. Drop me a line at kristinashernoff@macaronikid.com.
Have a great time on your picnic adventure, and remember...don’t forget the napkins!
